Depression Counselling

Depression can include feelings of worthlessness, inability to concentrate, indecisiveness, irritability and intolerance of others, lack of motivation or interest and withdrawal.

Depression can affect all of us at different times of our lives. The causes of it may not be immediately clear, and this can make it worse as we struggle to understand the reason why we are feeling the way we do.

Depression can also create its own spiral effect, when our frustration that what we first thought was just a normal period of feeling down is continuing weeks or even months after it began, showing no signs of ending and gaining in intensity as a result

Sufferers may be reluctant to seek help, feeling that it is a sign of weakness or that others won’t understand them and will ridicule them. Those they live with can also find life difficult as they feel unable to help and uncomfortable to tackle if we won’t speak about it ourselves.

Symptoms of depression can include feelings of worthlessness, inability to concentrate, indecisiveness, irritability and intolerance of others, lack of motivation or interest in things you usually enjoy and withdrawal from, or unwillingness to engage in, social activities.

The major types of depression include mild depression, clinical depression, bipolar disorder, post-natal depression and seasonal affective disorder.

Counselling can help to identify the original causes of depression as a starting point to combating it. It can help to break the link between the cause and the symptoms, preventing the vicious circle where depression feeds off itself and takes on a life beyond the issues that created it.

As an integrative psychotherapist, I offer a range of therapies to tackle depression including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness, Relaxation and Behaviour Therapy. At an initial meeting, I talk to clients about their needs, give them a chance to get a feel of how I work and decide on the individual therapy of combination of therapies they feel will be right for them. There is no set minimum or maximum number of sessions clients have to agree to, and there is ongoing review to ensure that sessions are productive and help clients overcome the causes and symptoms of their depression.

My fees are based on an ethical position of not wishing money to be a barrier to therapy so there is a fee scale guideline depending on your income and you place yourself at the level of your income.
